MONROVIA, LIBERIA — August 17, 2026: The Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) is advancing Liberia’s .lr country code top-level domain (ccTLD) redelegation process, marking a major step toward strengthening national ownership, governance, and security of the country’s digital identity. The development follows a week-long consultation led by LTA’s ccTLD Consultant, Mr. Olu Olutola, who briefed the LTA Board of Commissioners on the proposed governance and operational framework and the key requirements for submitting Liberia’s redelegation request to the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) through ICANN. Under the proposed framework, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications (MoPT) and the LTA will provide policy oversight, while the Liberian Internet Domain Registry (LIDR) will manage technical operations. A Multi-Stakeholder Advisory Council (MSAC) will support policy development and stakeholder participation.

Key priorities include developing the .lr Policy Framework, establishing the registry operator, deploying secure DNS infrastructure, accrediting registrars, and integrating registration data services.The LTA will now circulate the draft policy framework for stakeholder review and address outstanding policy, legal, and regulatory matters before submitting the recommendations to the Board for adoption. The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that Liberia’s .lr domain is managed transparently and in the public interest, while supporting a secure, stable, inclusive, and sustainable digital ecosystem. The initiative represents an important step toward strengthening Liberia’s national digital sovereignty and establishing a stronger foundation for the country’s digital future.
