Commissioner Honnah Pushes for Social Media Monetization Access for Liberian Creators
On a recent visit to Accra, Ghana, Commissioner Patrick R. Honnah held high-level talks with leading telecommunications regulators to advance global monetization opportunities for social media platforms.
His engagements included meetings with the Director General of Ghana’s National Communications Authority (NCA) and Mr. Aliyu Yusuf Abok, Executive Secretary of the West African Regulators Assembly (WATRA).
The discussions centered on ensuring that West African content creators—including those in Liberia—gain access to monetization features that would allow them to earn directly from their online content. Commissioner Honnah underscored that such opportunities are essential for: • Fostering innovation, • Strengthening digital economies, and • Ensuring African voices are equally represented in the global online marketplace.
Social media monetization, however, requires countries and creators to meet specific eligibility benchmarks, including: • A country’s official eligibility status, • The creator’s number of followers, and • Engagement metrics such as views and interactions. Commissioner Honnah assured that Liberia is actively working to meet these requirements, so that Liberian creators are not left behind.
“Our creators deserve to compete on the same level as their global counterparts. Opening the door to monetization will unlock opportunities for young innovators and entrepreneurs across Liberia,” he said. Through these regional partnerships, Liberia is positioning itself to secure greater digital inclusion and ensure fair participation in the global creator economy
